  • Whitehead never reach the surface of the skin or open

    2009 - 01.15

Whiteheads look like small white bumps and are usually about the size of a pinhead. They form under the skin as the follicles are more and more congested and enlarged. Whitehead never reach the surface of the skin or open. That is why they are called closed comedones.
Blackheads, on the other side are closed comedones, which continue to grow up until they break through the skin surface. At this point, the enlarged hair is visible and open to the skin surface. For this reason, blackheads are known as open comedones.
With the naked eye, the contents of an open comedones black. The black color is the result of oxidation, a process of discoloration that occurs when dead cells, sebum and bacteria are mixed with oxygen in the air. But some people mistakenly believe that dirt trapped under the skin causing an open comedones appear black. A young man remembers how this misunderstanding affected him: "I was black and all the heads on my forehead and nose. Concrete wash my face and constantly trying to scrub the dirt from the blackheads. But I kept getting more. I could do not understand where all the dirt was from. "
Since comedones not as a result of severe inflammation, they are not painful, no matter whether it is blackheads or white heads. Moreover, because comedones are not large, red, pus filled or if the distance from the skin of people with comedones, particularly those with white heads, it seems fairly clear. However, comedones are enlarged, clogged follicles, they do not disappear until the follicles unclog. This can not occur under normal circumstances, sebum production decreases or until the patient receives effective treatment of acne. Therefore, blackheads and white heads often remain on or under the skin for a long time.
Even more worryingly, some closed comedones not grow upward and open comedones. Instead, as more and more with tallow, they grow down below the surface of the skin and continue to grow until they burst. This leads to the formation of more severe acne lesions like papules and pustules.
