It is estimated that in Western countries about 2.5% of adults and 10-15% of children suffering from atopic eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. The atopic eczema is a chronic skin disease that often affects people with other allergic diseases such as asthma and hay from the cold. The manifestation of the disease is variable and may be in the form extended to spread throughout the body and located hitting form in only certain areas of the skin such as eyelids, skin per ocular (around the eye) and peribuccale (around the mouth). In children the main event is detected in cheek, in Regulation, in the back, addome and arms. The itching is the main symptom mainly due to the transformation of skin becomes red, dry and squalors. The symptom itching is so annoying for the child who pushes a scratch constantly causing lesions that can become infected sanguinolente. According to the researchers 65% of patients develop symptoms typical of the disease during the first year of life and 90% the first five years of age. From now available in pharmacies in Switzerland and Vatican City, but soon in Italy, a new topical therapy based on a new active ingredient called tacrolimus (Protopic ® brand name) in the form of ointment, sold on prescription. In controlled clinical trials conducted in Japan and America, about one third of patients treated with Protopic ® daily for three months have seen significant improvements and disappearance eczema compared to 7% of results obtained using a placebo cream or no active ingredient. As evidence of its effectiveness, suspension of therapy has noticed a gradual resurgence eczema. According to the mechanism of the U.S. drugs control, treatment can be continued for a year in security (The Associated Press, December 8, 2001). From studies presented at the European Congress of Dermatology and Venerology (EADV) this new drug based on tacrolimus (also known as FK 506), is the first of a new group of topical immunomodulators that acting on the immunological imbalance of the skin and restoring the its normal function, reduces skin inflammation, the redness and itching. Up to now have been treated with this drug from more than 10,000 patients in a clinical trial program worldwide, including both adults and children. Data presented at the Congress of Monaco show its effectiveness in the forms of atopic dermatitis moderate and severe. The advantage of this type of treatment with tacrolimus compared with conventional therapy with topical steroids, is the low occurrence of side effects such as skin atrophy. Good news for those who suffer from psoriasis, this brings new drug benefit in the treatment of this disease which many people are suffering and marks a further step in the search for new products to treat dermatological diseases.
